A man brandished a weapon that forced several vehicles off Interstate 5 in an apparent road rage incident Monday night, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Shortly before 6 p.m., several motorist reported seeing a man in a red Acura displaying what they described as a handgun, according to WSP Trooper Heather Axtman. The man was traveling north on Interstate 5 near the Old Fairhaven Parkway exit.

The incident forced several vehicles off the road, Axtman said. The “handgun” turned out to be a BB gun.

A motorist followed the suspect’s vehicle into Bellingham, according to police Lt. Don Almer. The suspect was pulled over by Whatcom County Sheriff’s deputies and Bellingham Police in the 1300 block of Woburn Street, Almer said.

Axtman said the man was detained, but had no further information on the suspect’s name, age or whether he was booked into jail.
