Road construction season is getting an early start along Interstate 5 near Blaine.

The Washington State Department of Transportation announced that crews will begin cable barrier improvements on Feb. 21.

The work near Blaine will be done in the evenings, beginning at 7 p.m. During the first section of work between Peace Portal Drive and D Street, crews will close the left lane in both directions to create a safe work zone, according to a news release from the agency.

The first section of work is expected to last through March 1. Other cable barrier work will be done at I-5 and Guide Meridian, with work lasting into May.

Also starting this week, WSDOT plans to close one lane of Grandview Road at Kickerview Road to move some utility lines and pipes. Flaggers will alternate traffic through the open lane.

That project is expected to last a couple weeks.
