A would-be robber fled empty-handed Tuesday night from a Fairhaven gas station and convenience store, police said.
A young white male entered the Starvin Sam’s at the corner of 12th Street and Donovan Avenue wearing a black mask about 9:50 p.m.
“Clerk started a dialogue with the suspect at which time the suspect lifted his sleeve showing what appeared to be the butt of a knife up his sleeve,” said Bellingham Police Lt. Danette Beckley. “Suspect then fled on foot without taking anything.”
Beckley said police units, including an officer with a tracking dog, converged on the store but the suspect escaped.

“Dog track led to an area where mask, shirt, knife and other clothing items were discarded,” Beckley said. “Items match what clerk described suspect wearing.”
No injuries were reported.
