Bellingham Police are investigating as arson a fire that destroyed a van parked on a neighborhood street near Bellingham Technical College Thursday morning.

“This seems to be related to a domestic argument between a female, who was borrowing the van, and her ex-boyfriend,” said police Lt. Robert Vander Yacht. No names were released because the incident is part of an open investigation, he said.

Firefighters extinguished the fire about 4 a.m. Thursday in the 2700 block of Nome Street near West Connecticut Street, Vander Yacht said. No injuries were reported and no other vehicles were damaged.

Vander Yacht said the silver 2000 Dodge Caravan was valued at $500.

About noon Wednesday, police investigated a report that the van’s rear tires had been slashed, leading police to believe the two incidents were intentional.
