A Bellingham man has been arrested after attacking a woman with a taser and holding her captive, demanding that she give him money, police said Thursday.

Jacob Steven Dezarn, 37, is facing charges of first-degree robbery and unlawful imprisonment after his arrest Wednesday. He remained in the Whatcom County Jail Thursday morning.

Bellingham Police Lt. Danette Beckley said Dezarn held a 41-year-old woman in a room in the 1800 block of Alabama Street, claiming she owed him $40 of an original $100 debt.

“Suspect would not let victim leave room by blocking door as he was intimidating her with a taser to try to get the rest of his money back,” Beckley said, adding the woman had red welts “consistent with a taser” on her left shoulder and ribcage.

She didn’t require medical attention, Beckley said.

According to court records, Dezarn has served prison time for burglary and drug-related offenses.
