WTA is starting a new bus route that will serve northern Whatcom County.

Route 65 is scheduled to begin on Monday and go between Nooksack, Everson, Lynden, Birch Bay Square and Ferndale.

The service will operate from 6:45 a.m. to 5:53 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to a news release from WTA.

The service will run as a flex route, meaning the bus can deviate off-route within a defined area if riders call in advance. The flex system tends to work well in rural areas where customers live farther away from the route, according to the WTA.

The new route is part of a two-year pilot project, funded by a grant from the Washington State Department of Transportation. WTA will evaluate whether to continue the service beyond September 2019.
