Bellingham Police arrest man for allegedly trying to strangle, smother his girlfriend

A 28-year-old man remained in Whatcom County Jail for allegedly attempting to strangle and smother his girlfriend during an argument.

Sean Thomas Wilkins was booked into jail Tuesday on suspicion of felony second-degree assault in connection with the incident, which was reported at 3:04 p.m. Tuesday in the 2800 block of Meridian Street, according to Bellingham Police.

His bail was set at $50,000.

Wilkins is accused of wrapping his hands around his girlfriend’s neck to strangle her and of using a pillow to try to smother her, according to Bellingham Police Lt. Danette Beckley.

Marks on the woman’s neck were consistent with the allegation, Beckley said.

The woman wasn’t hospitalized, and Wilkins was arrested without incident.

Wilkins also has another pending domestic violence case in Bellingham Municipal Court for a misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree assault, according to court documents. That incident was reported at 1 p.m. April 5 in the 1900 block of King Street in Bellingham.
