The body of a missing Ferndale man was found on a trail near Lake Samish Wednesday, according to Ferndale Police Lt. Matt Huffman.

Eduardo Tapia, 21, went missing at 10 a.m. Monday from the 1400 block of Rainier Court.

Tapia’s car was found in the parking lot of Samish Lake Park. The area was searched and Tapia’s body was found near a trail in the hills above the park, police said.

Huffman said detectives examined Tapia's cell phone data in an attempt to find him.

“It last hit a tower in the Lake Samish area,” Huffman said. “A detective spotted his car, and with assistance from the sheriff's office they started walking the trails and found his body.”

An autopsy performed Thursday confirmed the manner of death was suicide, said Whatcom County Medical Examiner Dr. Gary Goldfogel. A mental illness, schizophrenia, contributed to the death, he added.
