Whatcom coronavirus cases continue to slow with 2 positive tests, no deaths Thursday

Whatcom County continued to show a slowing in the number of new coronavirus cases Thursday, April 16, as two more residents tested positive for COVID-19 and no new deaths were reported by the Whatcom County Health Department.

The county now has had 271 coronavirus cases and 25 deaths, the health department reported. Nearly 1,200 COVID-19 tests in the county have come back negative, according to Washington State Department of Health data.

Whatcom County has seen only 10 new cases in the past five days — it had 11 reported Saturday, when the total climbed to 261.

The health department said Monday that a model it is using to help plan local response to the COVID-19 pandemic show Whatcom County may be past the initial wave of coronavirus infections.

More than 2.1 million cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed worldwide, with more than 140,700 deaths as of Wednesday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University. The United States has more than 641,000 confirmed cases — the most reported cases of any nation — with at least 30,920 deaths.
