During these days of social distancing, a longtime local company is bringing back the traditional neighborhood milk delivery.

Dairy Distributing announced on Monday, March 16, that it offers home delivery of milk and other products including cottage cheese, sour cream, eggs, cheese, butter, yogurt and ice cream. It will also deliver alternative dairy products, such as soy milk.

The idea occurred to Tyler Bray after finishing up some regular deliveries to restaurants and other businesses on Monday. He saw the new restrictions that would be taking place and as people began staying at home, he knew they would start running out of cold dairy products. On Tuesday, March 17, he got 12 orders and more calls/online orders were coming in on Wednesday.

So far he’s had a variety of people put in orders, including many elderly people who didn’t want to go to the store because of the coronavirus outbreak.

“There was one woman who was nearly in tears, she was so grateful,” Bray said in an interview. “That really got me.”

The most popular order? Ice cream, Bray said, noting that people could probably use a little treat these days.

The home delivery service is coming at a time when commercial business has dropped dramatically for the company. With restaurants restricted to only offering take-out and delivery, they’ve been cutting back on orders, Bray said.

Dairy Distributing is based in Bellingham and has been in operation since 1962. It is operated by Tyler’s dad, Bob. The company delivers Edaleen Dairy products, which is based in Lynden.

Orders are being accepted 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Bray said they will deliver in Whatcom County with a $20 minimum order. The orders can be made over the phone at 360-734-3019 or by email at dairytoyourdoorstep@gmail.com.
