Safeway adds gas station to its plans at Sunset Square

BELLINGHAM - Grocery store owner Safeway has submitted a permit application to build a gas station in Sunset Square.

The proposed fueling station would go in at 1189 E. Sunset Ave., which was home to Prime Tune & Brakes.

According to the application, 12 fueling pumps would be installed under a 5,137-square-foot canopy. The company would also put in a 697-square-foot standalone cashier kiosk.

According to the plans submitted, the entrances would be via James Street in the retail center area. No entrance is planned directly from Sunset Avenue.

The project would include demolition of the auto repair shop and installation of two underground gasoline storage tanks. The tanks would not exceed 60,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel.

Earlier this month Safeway submitted a design review application to remodel the former Sunset Cost Cutter space to put in a new grocery store.

Written comments on the fueling station application are being accepted until Monday, Dec. 30. For more information or written comments, email Brian Smart at bsmart@cob.org or call 360-778-8355.
