Village Books promotes Hanson to general manager position

Here's a news release from Chuck and Dee Robinson of Village Books, announcing a management change for the company. It's the first time the Robinsons have hired someone for the general manager position:

Village Books/Paper Dreams, in Bellingham's Historic Fairhaven District, has announced the promotion of Paul Hanson to the position of General Manager. Hanson, who joined the business in June of 2011, has been the Community Outreach Director, a function he will continue to oversee in his new role.

He began his retail bookselling career in 1989 in a mall bookstore where he worked for six years—the last three as the store manager.  Hanson had a sixteen-year tenure at Eagle Harbor Books on Bainbridge Island, serving as the store's manager for thirteen of those years, just before coming to Bellingham.  During those years he was active in the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association, serving on its board of directors and as its president; and in the American Booksellers Association, serving a three-year term on its Booksellers Advisory Council.

Since coming to Bellingham, Hanson has been actively engaged in building community partnerships with businesses and nonprofits.  Taking to heart the Village Books mission—"Building Community, One Book at a Time"—he has worked with dozens of organizations to build mutually beneficial relationships, and has extended that to the Paper Dreams side of the business as well.  One of his major responsibilities has been as the store's primary representative in the partnership with Whatcom Community College producing the Chuckanut Writers Conference.  He has also been instrumental in developing stronger relationships with writers and writers' groups.

"We got to know Paul years before he came to work with us at VIllage Books," said Co-owner Chuck Robinson.  "We're thrilled to have him step into this role and help lead this organization."

As Hanson assumes the role of General Manager, Chuck and Dee Robinson—founders of the company—will continue as Co-CEO.
