Samantha McConnell has opened a new restaurant in Bellingham and she has even bigger plans in the works.
McConnell and her business partner/fiancé Robert McAllister opened Mozza in Bakerview Square, near Hobbytown at 410 West Bakerview Road. The eatery offers a variety of dishes, including pasta, pizza and hot wings. Starting Monday, April 13, Mozza will eliminate its breakfast menu to focus on lunch and dinner. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, closed Sunday.
Response in the first couple of weeks has been good as the restaurant works out the usual kinks that come with a new business. McConnell said they spent time practicing on family and friends with original dishes prior to opening in order to get the menu and the portions correct. The ingredients they use are fresh, not frozen, which the first wave of customers has appreciated, she said. Even the dough for the pizza is made at the restaurant.
“The pasta dishes have been really popular,” she said, adding that they are continuing to take customer feedback and are making adjustments.

McConnell said she has plans to open Mozza restaurants in the region (Burlington possibly being the next location) as well as launch a non-profit organization called Standing Ground Ministries. The focus of the organization, she said, is to help the homeless and she has plans to build a facility that will help get people off the streets.
McConnell also wants people to know that Mozza (pronounced “Mo-Za”) is a kid-friendly place. The staff is already having fun putting special decoration on children’s orders.
“It’s great when we bring out something that’s been decorated and the kid says ‘whoa’,” she said with a laugh.
