The unemployment situation remains stable in Whatcom County, with the rate below 6 percent in five of the past six months, according to the most recent data from the Washington Employment Security Department.
If the unemployment rate follows past trends, it will go down in October as the holiday shopping season gets going and started to rise again in December and January as the seasonal shopping period ends.
In another key indicator of the health of the local economy, Whatcom County bankruptcies also have stabilized at a low level. Howevetr, they are still not as low as pre-recession levels.
