Building permit data fluctuates from month-to-month, depending on whether a large project is submitted. The year-to-date numbers, however, indicate some growth: Through August the valuations for Bellingham permits totaled $125.7 million, a 12.7 percent increase compared to a year earlier.
For unincorporated Whatcom County, permit valuations total $92.6 million through August, up 17 percent compared to a year ago. With a few unusually large projects in 2013, Ferndale's permit valuation in 2014 is down 58.1 percent.
Last year was a sluggish year in terms of construction jobs, so a steady rise this year helps get that industry closer to levels typically seen in recent years.
