Whatcom’s unemployment rate bumps up to 5.4 percent

Whatcom County’s unemployment rate went up slightly in August, according to a new report.

The local unemployment rate was 5.4 percent last month, up from a revised rate of 5.2 percent in July, according to data from the Washington State Employment Security Department. It’s the fourth time in the past five months Whatcom’s unemployment rate was below 6 percent.

Last month’s unemployment rate is down from a year ago, when it was at 6.5 percent.

The total number of employed Whatcom County residents was 97,720, up 1,030 people compared to a year ago. The total number of people actively seeking work last month was 5,590, down from 6,710 a year ago.
