Pepparkakor Slices

Holiday scents for many include the sweet smell of cookies baking in the oven. Bellingham Herald readers share these recipes and the family memories that go along with them.

PEPPARKAKOR SLICES

Beverly Robertson Smith of Ferndale shares this recipe for a spiced cookie that's popular in Sweden. The dough can be cut in shapes or chilled in rolls and sliced before baking. She says these are particularly good with hot coffee or cold milk.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup molasses

3 1/3 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon ginger

2 teaspoons cinnamon

2 teaspoons cloves

1 cup chopped almonds

DIRECTIONS

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream butter and sugar.

Add molasses and beat well.

Blend in flour, soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon and cloves.

Add almonds.

Divide dough in half and shape each half into a cylinder about 11/2 inches in diameter, or in a rectangle shape.

Wrap in waxed paper; chill several hours or overnight.

Cut into slices 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick and place on ungreased baking sheets.

Bake 10-12 minutes.

Makes 6-8 dozen.
