Pecan Crescents

Holiday scents for many include the sweet smell of cookies baking in the oven. Bellingham Herald readers share these recipes and the family memories that go along with them.

PECAN CRESCENTS

In the 1960s students at Ashland (Ohio) University baked cookies for sale during December. Gwen Cooke of Bellingham says this was one of their best sellers.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup shortening

2/3 cup sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 1/3 cups flour

1/4 cup pecans, finely chopped

Powdered sugar for topping

DIRECTIONS

Heat oven to 325 degrees.

Cream butter, shortening and sugar.

Stir in vanilla, flour and nuts.

Mix thoroughly.

Chill until firm.

Make into small balls using approximately 2 tablespoons of dough.

Form into crescent shapes.

Bake 15 minutes.

Cool and dip in powdered sugar.

Makes 4 dozen.
