WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Kids start with a blank slate and a full keyboard in "Lexi's World." Choose a letter to start spelling a word. As kids choose each letter, only some are available for successive choices so that kids are guided towards spelling certain words. Once a word is complete, tap on the check mark and it comes to life. Gradually add more elements by spelling more words – such as sun, rainbow, run, or grass – and watch what happens. Some words, like "mud," only become available after typing other words, like "pig."
IS IT ANY GOOD?
This sweet spelling game makes words come to life in a way that's both gentle and exciting. With just a simple QWERTY keyboard, kids are in the driver's seat and can easily dictate what they want to introduce to "Lexi's World." Once kids choose a letter to start, most of the letters on the keyboard black out, which leads kids to spell only certain words. With limited options, kids are able to focus on accessible and familiar words that should have meaning for them. Though most available words are animal names, there are also some others like "apple," "night," "sun," "rain," and a small collection of verbs that make Lexi move (e.g, "run," "jump," "ride"), so the collection does end up being quite varied. And, many words connect to each other or are available only when certain conditions have been created, which helps build context. For example, the horse thinks about an apple, so kids can type "apple" to give it something to eat. Of course, having limited options may frustrate some kids who want to spell and create things that aren't available. The audio allows kids to hear each letter name and complete word so that they can work on connecting the written symbols to spoken sounds. And, it's important to see an African American main character of a kid's app, which adds to the factors that show "Lexi's World" was thoughtfully made.
