Ruth Carolyn Martin

Ruth was born in Ray, North Dakota on May 19, 1912. Her father, Ira S. AbPlanalp, was a pioneer doctor. Ruth survived many childhood diseases. In 1930, Ruth graduated from Williston High School where she played the violin in the orchestra. She also played tennis with her sister, Helen.

Ruth attended Valley City College then taught school for 2 years. She married William “Bill” Martin in 1934 and they moved to Bellingham in 1939 where Bill worked for the Bellingham Herald. He founded Bellingham Roofing Company in 1952. Ruth graduated in teaching from Western Washington College of Education (now W.W.U.) in 1954 and was a substitute teacher in Bellingham. Bill died in 1970.

The Martins raised their family on South Forest St. Her daughter is Jane Hagen (wife of Navy Captain James Hagen – deceased) of Maryland (4 grandchildren, John, twins Julie and Jenny, and Jay. Jenny married Feliks Schwartz. They have the 1 great grandchild, Jakob).

Ruth’s oldest son is Robert Martin (and wife Eva Martin) of Everett (2 grandchildren, Alex and Brian). Her youngest son David Martin – died in childhood of Leukemia.

Ruth has been an active member of the First Congregational Church for 70 years. She accounts for her longevity to a loving family.
