Today, Robert and Ecomae will celebrate 65 years of love, marriage and family with their children, Rick, Robin Kain, Rae (Ron) Crawford and grandchildren, Chris (Lynne) Kain, Kendal and Kaelyn Crawford. Oldest son Randy (Vicky), their children, Kathy, Nancy and Sandy along with seven great-grandchildren are in Wyoming and Alaska and plan to celebrate later this summer.
In 1976, Robert retired from the Bellingham Fire Department and Ecomae from her business, Merle Norman Cosmetics, moved to Kauai and worked for Hawaii Kailani Management on Maui and Kauai Islands. Retiring again in 1990, they worked for Showlights modeling agency appearing in videos, print and movies in Hawaii, Seattle and Bellingham. They now divide their time between Palm Springs and Bellingham.
Robert met Ecomae at the Ferndale Skating rink and was invited to Sunday dinner as required before any date would be approved. Ecomae vowed never to ride in Robert’s old model A Ford so at a chance meeting he led her to his newly purchased car, a 1939 Dodge Coupe! She rode in that! In fact, the sale of that car purchased the engagement ring she wears today. Life and love became serious when Robert joined the Army in 1942 and on April 14, 1943, they were married. Life and love has been interesting, active and sometimes surprising throughout the years. Love of family and close friends complete the fabric of their commitment to each other.
