Viola Mooers of Bellingham celebrated her 90th birthday on January 4th with dinner at the Black Angus Restaurant with family and a birthday party at Highgate Assisted Living. In her honor, the family distributed 90 roses to residents and staff of Highgate and shared a half-sheet birthday cake made by La Patisserie.
Viola was born Jan. 4, 1918, in Patterson, New Jersey. Her parents were both immigrants who worked in the silk mills.
At the age of 40, she learned to drive, at 50 she enrolled at Santa Monica College, earned her certificate as a Licensed Vocational Nurse and, at 51, completed her Nursing Degree and became a Registered Nurse. She worked as an RN at the VA Hospital in Los Angeles and served as a training nurse for physician interns from UCLA.
Over the years, she has enjoyed horseback riding, travel, and hosting parties for friends. She has visited 42 of the 50 United States, Canada, Mexico, and England.

Her children are Douglas Mooers (wife, Cheryl) of Bellingham and Helen Martin (husband, Ed) of Winchester, Tenn. She has seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
