Kindergarten is a magical time, even for children who've had a couple years of preschool or lots of personal attention from stay-at-home moms or dads. For most children, it's their first day of school in a traditional sense. Those gawky, bug-eyed little 5-year-olds are taking their first steps toward reading and writing and arithmetic, learning the alphabet and the numbers and how to add and subtract. They'll be making great strides physically, socially and emotionally. They'll learn to observe and describe the world in ways they never imagined.
