"I get sad when I see parents turning something small into a battle with their children."
Find more on the topic from blogger Roxann “Rock” Rose-Duckworth, who writes about Parenting: Kids 5 to 12 years old on the BellinghamFamilies.com blog.
Roxann has been an elementary teacher since 1988 with teaching experience in New York, Idaho and Washington. She taught for many years in the Bellingham School District. In 2009, she co-founded Bridgeway Christian Academy, where she teaches third-, fourth- and fifth-graders in a multiage classroom.
In addition to working with elementary students, she has spent more than 10 years working with future educators at Whatcom Community College and Western Washington University. She has been teaching parenting classes since 2005. She teaches a full-day class at Bellingham Technical College four times a year.
Her classes focus mostly on strategies recommended by Love and Logic (loveandlogic.com), but she's also greatly influenced by Barbara Coloroso, Alfie Kohn, Gary Thomas and Haim Ginott.
She says she has learned a lot from the literally hundreds of families she has worked with over the years. Hearing their challenges and success stories have helped her clarify many of her ideas about effective parenting.
