Restaurant Update: Whatcom County restaurant activity picks up in September

After a relatively quiet August, new Whatcom County restaurant openings have picked up.

Earlier this month Luna’s Bistro opened at 3004 Cinema Place, near the Barkley Regal Cinema Stadium 16. Over at Bellis Fair, Big Orange and Villa Italian Kitchen opened in the food court. In the former Shrimp Shack space at 1200 Cornwall Ave., I & Wife Thai Cuisine opened its doors.

One longtime Fairhaven restaurant is undergoing a major remodel. Construction began in late August at The Black Cat that includes gutting the kitchen. Co-owner Sam Tino estimates the remodel will be done in late October or early November. Along with the kitchen overhaul, some cosmetic work will be done in the dining room. It's been a long time coming for the restaurant, which first opened in 1987. The restaurant is closed during the work.

In October Bellis Fair will have a couple more restaurant openings. Buffalo Wild Wings is scheduled to open on Monday, Oct. 27, while Chipotle is slated for a Friday, Oct. 31, opening.

In terms of restaurants going through the permit process, there are a couple in Bellingham. A state liquor license application was submitted for a new restaurant called Maikham, going into the former Dashi Noodle Bar space at 1311 N. State St. An application was submitted to put in a restaurant at 202 E. Holly St., in the Gateway Building. The restaurant name listed on the application is Jun Sushi and Bento.
