Out With Kids: Whatcom County libraries offer free valentine-making workshops

Bring your imagination and heartfelt sentiment to any of several valentine-making workshops for school-age children at Whatcom County library branches over the next few days.

All materials are provided free for the Let’s Make Valentines! workshops, including templates and directions for popular craft projects, said Tammy LaPlante, children’s services specialist with Whatcom County Library System.

“I just love Valentine’s Day because I love taking that time for letting people know how I feel about them,” LaPlante said. “It’s amazing what the kids come up with. There are always kids who take off on their own, with beautiful things made from the heart.”

LaPlante said the library has been offering similar valentine-making workshops annually since long before she started with the county 22 years ago.

“It’s one of my favorite programs,” she said.

She said they will make a lollipop valentine depicting a snowman called Olaf, which participants might recognize from a popular animated musical film.

A card with a curved flap opening offers a “cool spiral effect” for the note inside, and there’s a treasure chest template “they’ll get to glue jewels inside,” she said.

There are paper doilies that can be decorated with ribbon, and a heart pocket where the giver can place a piece of candy or a trinket.

“Every year, we have a bookmark,” LaPlante said. “They go crazy with that. We show the kids how to make a pop-up and do collage.”

Usually, LaPlante starts things off with a Valentine’s Day-theme story to inspire creative thinking. She said the directions and templates are helpful, but coloring outside the lines is encouraged.

“Of course we always encourage the kids that they are welcome to take these things and let their little imaginations run wild,” she said.
