Climb tree, see bird boxes, learn about trees at Arbor Day events

Arbor Day festivities this weekend feature a range of free activities that revolve around trees from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Elizabeth Park, northwest of Broadway and Elizabeth Street in the Columbia neighborhood.

A 10:30 a.m. guided tree walk is led by professional arborist James Luce and local tree expert John Wesselink, who offer information about the park’s varied flora.

At 12:30 p.m. is a tree-climbing event for children under the guidance of professional climbers. Children are urged to bring bicycle helmet, and climbing harness and rope will be provided.

Information booths will include knot-tying, the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association and the North Cascades Audubon Society, which will have cavity nesting bird boxes on display.
