Whatcom Jazz Music Art Center hosts Saul Klein on tenor sax and Jon Hamar on bass, appearing with Julian MacDonough on drums, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, at the Majestic, 1027 N. Forest St. (enter on Maple Street).
The show will be Klein’s debut on the Arts Center stage. Many Northwest musicians consider Klein one of the purest improvisers in the region’s jazz scene, covering all styles of music, from classical and early traditional jazz to modern jazz, free jazz, country music, and pop.
Joining him will be another extraordinary improviser, bassist Jon Hamar, who has played with a who’s who of jazz and classical musicians, and in recording studios. The show might be one of the last opportunities to hear Hamar in Bellingham for the foreseeable future; he’s leaving the Northwest for a teaching job at the University of Tennessee.
Tickets: $10 general, $5 students, free for Arts Center members. Details: wjmac.org, 206-612-5967.
