Guitarist Olli Hirvonen and oboist Saku Mattila play improvisations inspired by the music of Jean Sibelius at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, 1207 Ellsworth St., and at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 12, at the Conway Muse, 18444 Spruce St., in Conway.
They present their own takes of classic melodies, liberating them from the original context and giving them new life inspired not only by Sibelius but also by themes of Finland, summer, and love. Coming from jazz and classical backgrounds, respectively, they combine the different musical worlds effortlessly, creating a truly personal style.
After playing together for almost eight years, Hirvonen and Mattila have developed a deep music and personal connection that lifts the music to new heights.
In the second half of the program, Ollie and Saku will be joined by Sharyn Peterson on violin and viola, and by Matthew Rehfeldt on cello and guitar. The show is sponsored by the Finlandia Foundation, Suomi Chapter of Bellingham.
