MUSIC: WWU ensemble performs Benedictine choral music May 9

Western Washington University’s Collegium Musicum takes its name from the ubiquitous university orchestras of the early 18th century, most famously Johann Sebastian Bach’s ensemble at the University of Leipzig.

The ensemble, conducted by Bertil von Boer, performs at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Western’s Performing Arts Center.

The concert features three Benedictine sacred choral works: The “Te Deu” by Joseph Martin Kraus (the Swedish Mozart); a “Magnifica” by Swiss 18th-century composer Franz Dominik Stalder; and a “Laurentine Litany” by Pater Roman Hoffstetter. The three works were all rediscovered in German and Swiss archives.
