The Whatcom Jazz Music Arts Center hosts Jay Thomas and his band, the Cantaloupes, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at The Majestic, 1027 N. Forest St. (use the Maple Street entrance).
Performing with Thomas, who plays trumpet and saxophone, is John Hansen on piano, Michael Glynn on bass, and Adam Kessler on drums.
The band has fondness for the blues feeling prevalent in hard bop and boogaloo music, with an element of Latin, as in jive samba and music that goes back to the ’60s with tunes by Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, Cannonball Adderely, Ramsay Lewis, and Jimmy Smith.
