Argentine pianist Claudio Mendez and Port Townsend bandoneon player Betram Levy perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the YWCA ballroom, 1026 N. Forest St.
Mendez recently arrived from Buenos Aires and just completed an extensive European tour in which he presented his “Tribute to Argentine Folklore and Tango Pianists.” Levy has dedicated the last quarter of a century to the study of Argentina’s other emblematic instrument, the bandoneon.
Together, they will present a tour of the diverse popular culture of Argentine through music and stories, performing classic tango duets. Levy will also present solo compositions not usually heard on the bandoneon. The two have a deep friendship that spans more than a decade, and have toured Argentina and the United States together.
After the concert, people can stay to dance a few tangos and to enjoy refreshments and homemade empanadas. An introductory dance lesson will be offered for novices.
