MUSIC: Seattle’s Jacob Zimmerman Quintet performs with local student combos

Seattle-based alto saxophonist and composer Jacob Zimmerman, an integral part of the Seattle’s jazz community, studied music at that city’s internationally renowned Garfield High School, the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and Mills College in Oakland, Calif.

He will perform with Jake Svendsen on piano, Raymond Larson on trumpet, Nate Parker on bass, and Julian MacDonough on drums, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at The Majestic, 1027 N. Forest St, as part of the Whatcom Jazz Music Arts Center series.

Zimmerman was recognized as the “2013 Emerging Artist of Year” by Earshot Jazz.

Bellingham jazz fans might recognize Zimmerman; his group played the first gig in the Art Center’s space. This time, he is bringing the band that will tour the West Coast with him in April and May, culminating with a recording session. The quintet will perform bop, post-bop and hard-bop jazz.

Opening for the quintet will be the second performance of the center’s high school student combos.

Tickets are $10 general, $5 students, free for center members. Details: 206-612-5967, wjmac.org.
