Poetry: Poets from U.S. and Canada honored for peace efforts

International peace poets will be honored in a free event at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Mount Baker Theatre’s Encore Room, 104 N. Commercial St.

The celebration begins at 10 a.m. with a two-hour workshop, “Writing Peace,” conducted by poet Carla Shafer. Activities resume after lunch (not part of the event) at 1:30 p.m. with readings by the award-winners who are being honored for their leadership in the poetry community.

The award-winners are Matt and Alona Christman, Dana Lyons, Ashok K. Bhargava, Ariadne Sawyer, Darrell Hillaire, Jim Milstead, Luther Allen, Duke Ashrafuzzaman, Matt Brouwer, Rebecca Mabanglo-Mayor, Jim Bertolino, Bernice Lever and Anita Boyle.

In addition, the first volume of “Peace Poems,” a collection of poems from the 2013 and 2014 World Peace Read-In, held in Bellingham, will be available to purchase. Details: chuckanutsandstone.blogspot.com, 360-393-3439, 360-961-2320.
