Music: Jazz guitarist Mark Elf plays for Whatcom Jazz Arts Music Center

Whatcom Jazz Music Art Center hosts New York City jazz guitarist Mark Elf and his trio, featuring drummer Greg Williamson, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Majestic, 1027 N. Forest St. (use the side entrance on Maple Street).

A bop-based guitarist, Elf has created a stir with his small-group recordings. He attended Berklee School of Music, picked up experience playing with a who’s who of modern mainstream jazz (including Wynton Marsalis, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton and Branford Marsalis), and has recorded as a sideman with Lou Donaldson, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Wynton Marsalis and Jon Hendricks.

Elf spent time with Jimmy Heath’s group, but has achieved his greatest recognition thus far with his recordings for the Jen Bay Jazz label and a set recorded in Chile, made available in the U.S.

Tickets are $10 general, $5 students, free for center members. Details: wjmac.org.
