Millie and the Mentshn play klezmer music in a concert called “Heavy Mettle: From Shtetl to Tin Pan Alley” at noon Friday, Feb. 26, in Whatcom Community College’s Heiner Theater, 237 W. Kellogg Road. The concert is part of WCC’s International Week.
Millie and the Mentshn is a group of classically trained musicians who play world music that ranges from Prokofiev to Gershwin, from Latin to dance-in-the-aisle klezmer. Audiences of all cultural backgrounds enjoy the unusual combination of instruments, the intricate harmonies, and the variety of musical styles and traditions. Even for people unfamiliar with th musical genre, Irving Berlin, Bach, Piazzolla and Gershwin will appear among others in the tangled web of the story from Gypsies to cowboys to baseball.
