Music: Galactic brings New Orleans’ Mardi Gras to the Wild Buffalo

Galactic — drummer Stanton Moore, bass player Robert Mercurio, saxophonist and harmonica player Ben Ellman, keyboardist Richard Vogel and guitarist Jeff Raines — is a quintessential modern-day New Orleans band. They play at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at Wild Buffalo, 208 W. Holly St.

The band formed about 18 years ago in New Orleans and cut their teeth playing the biggest party in America: Mardi Gras, when the town shuts down entirely to celebrate. Their instrumental act is in the tradition of the Meters, the JB’s, and Booker T. & the MG’s — bands equally comfortable recording their own material or working with vocalists.

Their latest album is “Carnivale Electricos,” and includes Brazilian-flavored instrumentals, the music of groups of black men called Mardi Gras Indians, marching-band melodies, and funk.

Tickets are $25. Details: 360-746-8733, wildbuffalo.net.
