Whatcom Symphony Orchestra presents a midwinter musical escape, “Una Notte in Italia,” (although it’s an afternoon concert, not evening) with featured soloist Paul Erhard, double bass, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Commercial St.
Erhard will perform a solo work by Nino Rota, famed for his soundtrack for the “Godfather” films. The program also includes Gabrielli‘s “Canzon septimi toni a 8 Rossini,” the overture to “La Gazza Ladra Rota: Divertimento Concertante“ for double bass and orchestra; and Puccini’s intermezzo from “Manon Lescaut.”
The program ends with Respighi’s “Pines of Rome,” incorporating bird calls and other effects to evoke Rome’s historic ambiance.
Tickets, $13 to $39, are at 360-734-6080 and mountbakertheatre.com. Purchase any adult ticket and receive a free ticket for students age 12 to 17.
