Seamus Blake performs the music of legendary saxophonist and composer Eddie Harris, joined by Geoffrey Keezer on piano; Michael Glynn on bass; and Julian MacDonough on drums; at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Majestic, 1027 N. Forest St.
The project started three years ago from the suggestion of Paul Stache, owner of Smoke Jazz in New York City. Stache knew that Blake loved Harris and thought it would be fun to organize a tribute weekend to him. Since then it has become an annual event.
In picking the music Blake tries to cover classics as well as lesser-known tunes. Harris was a diverse musician who spanned many styles, including bebop, funk, soul, bossa nova and avant garde.
Keezer and Blake attended college together were frequent collaborators in their formative years. More recently, they have played together with Tal Wilkenfeld and Mike Pope.
The concert is one in the Whatcom Jazz Music Arts Center concert series. Tickets are $20; $10 students; free for center members
