Songwriter and guitarist Anna Coogan and one-man rhythm section Willie B celebrate the release of their new record, “The Birth of the Stars,” Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Green Frog, 1015 N. State St.
Coogan trained classically in Austria and worked for years as a fisheries biologist studying Lake Washington. After 12 years playing music in the Seattle area, she moved to Ithaca, N.Y., in 2011. After seeing the Johnny Dowd Band perform, she traded in her acoustic guitar for a 1979 Stratocaster and submerged herself in Ithaca’s experimental rock scene, joining Dowd’s band as a singer and guitarist.
Willie B, a fellow Bostonian and Dowd’s longtime drummer, joined Anna to support Taj Mahal at the State Theater in Ithaca, along with musical powerhouse JD Foster on bass. Scheduling conflicts prevented Foster from joining them further, and Anna and Willie began performing as a duo.
Willie, best known for incorporating bass pedals into his drum set and playing drums and bass at the same time, has spent years on the road, including six weeks supporting Elton John.
The duo’s new album consists of nine original songs, co-written with Foster. Coogan and Willie B will be sharing the evening with local favorite Stephen Ray Leslie.
