Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley perform at 7 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Green Frog, 1015 N. State St., in support of their new album, “Before the Sun Goes Down.”
The album pairs Rob Ickes, winner of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 15-time Dobro Player of Year, with singer and guitarist Trey Hensley, whom Ickes recently discovered while recording in Tennessee. After collaborating with Hensley on an album track from Blue Highway’s current release, Ickes and Hensley recorded their album.
“Before the Sun Goes Down” blends contemporary bluegrass and the spare studio stylings of classic ’60s and ’70s country music. Hensley’s voice is a throwback to great country singers of the genre’s first golden era, such as early George Jones and Merle Haggard. Ickes is a great musical foil to Hensley’s prodigious talent, both as a musician and co-producer.
