Fairhaven district opens holiday season with art, music and Santa

Historic Fairhaven District celebrates the season with its annual Holiday Festival opening celebrations and art walk from 5 to 8 pm. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 28-29. Visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus from 3 to 4:50 p.m. in the gazebo by Skylark’s, enjoy the lighting of the trees at 5 p.m. in the Village Green, and stroll into participating businesses to see art on display.

Village Books will feature Yaqui flutist Peter Ali, in celebration of National American Indian Heritage Month, performing 5 to 6 p.m. Friday and 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday on the store’s main level. Ali is a self-taught flutist who plays native flutes and shares their stories, as well as stories of his ethnic heritage. His father, from Morocco, is Berber; his mother is of Yaqui Indian heritage as well as Spanish and Italian from Sonora, Mexico.

For the last several years Ali has taught workshops for Indian education programs in the region, and has offered a flute-making class for Northwest Indian College. In 2008, he played for the Dali Lama on Children’s Day during the Seeds of Compassion tour.
