Canadian author recounts wilderness survival

Nikki van Schyndel shares her book, “Becoming Wild: Living the Primitive Life on a West Coast Island,” at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at Village Books, 1200 11th St.

Set in the Broughton Archipelago, a maze of isolated islands off Canada’s west coast, “Becoming Wild” is a story of survival in the pristine wilderness. Sometimes predator and sometimes prey, 29-year-old Nikki van Schyndel fends off the harsh weather, hungry wildlife, threat of starvation and the endless perils of this rugged raincoast — for 19 months.
