Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, an example of the redeeming power of music and the ability of people to persevere through unimaginable hardship and emerge with optimism intact, perform at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Wild Buffalo, 208 W. Holly St.
Throughout the 1990s, the West African country of Sierra Leone was wracked with a bloody war that forced millions to flee their homes. The musicians who eventually formed the Refugee All Stars were all forced to leave the capital city of Freetown due to rebel attacks.
Last summer, the All Stars began preparing their fourth studio album, “Libation.” Their unplugged style is a return to the days in refugee camps when the band had to make do with whatever instruments they could round up or make by hand.
