BELLINGHAM — The process of demolishing the tissue mill and some other old Georgia-Pacific Corp. structures on the waterfront will begin Monday.

Fred Seeger, Port of Bellingham facilities director, told port commissioners Tuesday that GP is paying for the work. The company agreed to that as part of the land transfer agreement that gave the port title to G-P’s 137 waterfront acres in 2005. GP ended a decades-long presence on the waterfront in December 2007 when the tissue mill shut down.

G-P has hired Staton Companies of Eugene, Ore., to do the work, Seeger said.
