A quick recap of Monday, Sept. 15, in area high school sports and a look ahead to Tuesday’s highlights:

STARS OF THE DAY

Sara Brady

School: Lummi

Sport: Volleyball

Position: Hitter/setter

Year: Senior

What she did: Brady was a perfect 15 for 15 serving for the Blackhawks. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough against North Sound Christian, as Lummi suffered its first loss of the season.

Kyle Buckham

School: Bellingham

Sport: Boys’ tennis

Event: No. 1 singles

Year: Junior

What he did: Buckham made it look easy, against Burlington-Edison’s Etienne Luiten. Buckham did not drop a game in an impressive victory that helped the Red Raiders to the non-conference team win.

WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED

Lynden tennis duo ‘on fire’

You can say that Andrew Blair and Briley Benner work well together.

Lynden’s No. 1 boys’ doubles team improved to 3-1 on the season after a 6-1, 6-0 victory on Monday, Sept. 15, over South Whidbey’s top doubles team.

While Blair is a junior and Benner is just a sophomore, Lynden boys’ tennis coach Trey Ballard said they have that instinct on the court that is needed to be a top doubles team.

“They are a pretty strong team,” Ballard said in a phone interview. “They are both quick. They work well together. They were on fire (on Monday).”

The duo’s only loss came to Bellingham.

Cooper’s first match a long one

Sean Cooper’s first varsity action of the season wasn’t easy.

The Bellingham senior had been dealing with an illness at the start of the boys’ tennis season, but he finally got enough practices in to participate in his first match.

And it was a long one.

Cooper defeated Burlington-Edison’s Chris Stilwill 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) at No. 3 singles to help Bellingham to the victory.

“He got a quick baptism there,” Bellingham coach Steve Chronister said in a phone interview. “It was our longest match of the year. He was pretty tired and pretty sore, but it was a great win.”

TUESDAY’S BEST BET

The Mariners and Storm each have high hopes for the season. The cross-city rivals get one last chance to tune-up in this non-conference showdown before the Northwest Conference season gets rolling on Thursday.
