Some of the more experienced amateur motocross riders from across the state will be at Hannegan Speedway this weekend for the Washington State MX Championship Series.

"We consider this the premier MX series in the state," said Steve Harris, Hannegan's weekend motocross chairman. "We will get riders from all over the state, and even some from Oregon."

The races on Saturday, Aug. 9, and Sunday, Aug. 10, represent the second and third races in the 10-race series, which began Sunday, Aug. 3, at Ward Creek. The series will visit Port Angeles next weekend before heading to Washougal, Straddleline for two races and Ward Creek. It wraps up Oct. 19 at Port Angeles.

"I'd say the riders have a little bit more experience than some of the riders that compete every Thursday," Harris said in a phone interview.

Harris estimated about 15-20 riders in the series will be regulars from Hannegan, and between 200 and 250 riders are expected each day, depending on the weekend weather and the number of competitors that travel.

Both weekend races will be double motos, rather than the normal single motos run on Thursday nights, with practice starting at 9 a.m. and racing action slated to start at about 10 a.m. Points will be accumulated during each moto and used to determine each day's class winners.

Harris said no licenses are needed to race, and entry is open to anyone interested in competing.

"It should be a lot of fun," Mount Baker Motorcycle Club president Brian Larcom said in a phone interview. "It will be a great chance to see some good motocross racing."
