COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK: Rapids pick up identical victories, move into third

The PSSA Rapids posted 4-1 wins in both their matches last weekend against Peace Arch SC at home on Saturday and at the Vancouver Whitecaps Prospects on Sunday.

Against Peace Arch, the Rapids got first-half goals from Scot Swanson and Todd Stauber to take a 2-0 lead into half-time. Robbie Tice pulled one back for the visitors from the penalty spot, before Jason Jorgensen restored the two-goal cushion for the Rapids with his seventh goal of the season. Matt Ranten volleyed home a late goal to add to the scoreline and make the result certain.

On Sunday, the Rapids went a goal down when the Whitecaps’ Marcus Johnson scored, but battled back to tie the game and take the lead in the first half through two Jorgensen-headed goals.

Jorgensen completed his hat trick, all three goals with his head, midway through the second half. Shogo Kurihara ensured the Rapids scored four in two consecutive games with a closerange finish late in the match.

The results from the weekend put the Rapids up to third place in the PCSL Men’s Premier Division with 16 points, five points back of secondplaced Victoria United.

YEAGER’S FIRST, SECOND

The Yeager’s over-55 and

over-60 men’s softball teams took first and second place at the Northwest Senior Games last weekend in Redmond.

Yeager’s 60s finished first by defeating Yeager’s 55s 18-17 in the championship game. Both teams were undefeated going into the title game.

Leading hitters for the Yeager’s 60s were Vern Tillman (.900), Wally Heffner (.800), Jerry Bianchi (.786), Bud Turner (.750) and Daryl Smiley (.700). Bianchi, Fred White, Bob Ayres, Bill Edwardson and B.J. Thomas had home runs.

Leading hitters for the Yeager’s 55s were Brent Binkley (.786), Jim Kyllingmark (.722), John Pyktel (.688), Randy Cline (.688) and Jerry Ronk (.650). Kyllingmark also hit a home run.

LYNDEN WINS TITLE

The Lynden High School varsity girls’ basketball team won the Cloud 9 Sports Lynden Summer Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Sunday, defeating Ferndale 48-38 in the championship.

Lynden’s Brandi Benner was the MVP with 18 points in the title game. Lynden won all five games, defeating Bellingham, Sultan, Sehome, South Langley (B.C.), and Ferndale along the way.

Sixteen teams participated in the tournament.

BLUE SOX WIN TOURNEY

The Bellingham Blue Sox, a U12 Cal Ripken baseball team,

won a tournament at Moses Lake last weekend, winning all five games en route to the title.

Tyler Knutsen and Oscar White combined for a shutout in the semifinal, a 4-0 win over Eastmont, and White and Austin Rapp shut down Moses Lake in the final 6-0.

The team consists of Davis Hampton, Chad Stevenson, Landon Tripp, Ben Tripp, Austin Sugden, Taylor Rapp, Austin Vosburgh, Oscar White, Josh Zavisubin, Austin Rapp and Tyler Knutsen.

FERNDALE WINS LYNDEN TOURNAMENT

The Ferndale Cal Ripken U12 baseball team won first place at the Summer Kick Off Tournament at Bender Field in Lynden June 15th, going undefeated during the tournament.

Team members are Andrew Littrell, Anthony Fleck, Anthony Pace, Brady Bauthues, Brady Shearer, Cameron Ivy, Cody Marshall, Cooper Clark, Earl Johnson, Jared Garcia, Peter Pennylegion and Taylor VanVleck. They are coached by Brad Bauthues, Chris Pace and Dan Shearer.

BASH CLAIM QUALIFIER

The Bellingham Bash, a 14- year-old select baseball team, won the Triple Crown Sports Father’s Day Slugfest in Tri- Cities this past weekend.

With the win, Bellingham earned a berth in the Triple Crown National Championships to be held in Colorado Springs, Colo., in late July.

The Bash were undefeated in five games against competition from select teams in the Northwest. Bellingham defeated teams from Woodinville, Vancouver, Portland, Ore., Richland and Bellevue.

Standouts on the mound for Bellingham include Mickey Satushek and Cody Haas, who combined for a shutout victory in the opening game against Woodinville, and Noah Elliott, who struck out eight in three innings of work against Vancouver.

Carl Henkel earned the victory in the semifinal against the Richland Cyclones, while Michael Hobson pitched six strong innings in the championship final against Bellevue to earn the victory.

John Albert earned three saves over the weekend and struck out the side in the final frame with the tying runs aboard to preserve the championship victory.

Offensively, the Bash were led by leadoff hitter Kyle Prather who scored nine runs, Cody Mason with 11 RBI, and Oliver Dougherty with eight runs scored.

The Bash improved on the season to 44-1 and will now begin preparing for district, sectional and regional play for PONY baseball with the hope of earning the Northwest Championship and a spot in the World Zone Championships in Southern California in early August.

RANGERS HAWAII-BOUND

The WFC Rangers Girls U18- 19 team is traveling to Hawaii to battle the top select club soccer teams in the 2008 Far West Regional Championships.

The Rangers are coached by Josh Turpen and Dean Haverstraw, who last week led the girls to a second-place finish in the WSYSA Champions Cup.

The team will be the only representative of Washington state for the U19 age group. They will face the Arizona and Hawaiian state champions and Arizona’s No. 2 team in pool play. The top two in each group will advance to the quarterfinals.

13-YEAR-OLDS WIN TOURNEY

The Stickmen Baseball Club, a group of 13-year-olds from Whatcom County, won the Father’s Day Tournament last weekend at Sumas Complex.

The team won the championship game 10-1. Players on the team are: Allen Sutton, Alex Check, Connor Phelps, Brant Wark, Matt Forhan, Brad Alvord, Matt Richard, Anthony Reyes, Jon Bennett, Aaron Burke, Jake Schroeder, Austyn Sprague and Daniel Goebel.
