Four Whatcom County players were named to the all-state baseball teams released Tuesday by the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association.

Ferndale pitcher/infielder Casey Locker was named to the Class 3A first team, Sehome pitcher Jared Vera and Bellingham infielder Michael Takemura were chosen for the Class 2A first team, and Ferndale outfielder Spencer Hannan was named to the 2A second team.

Locker hit .449 with 22 runs and 26 RBI and Hannah hit .429 with 34 runs and 21 RBI for the Golden Eagles, who advanced to the 3A state tournament before falling to eventual state champion Kennewick.

Vera had a 9-1 pitching record and hit. 407 for the Mariners, who won their second consecutive Class 2A state championship. Takemura was the Northwest Conference batting champion as he hit .448 for the Red Raiders, who advanced to the 2A district tournament.

SHOOK TO TAKE OVER QUEST MEN’S TEAM

Sean Shook, who has coached for several Whatcom County prep basketball teams, has been named men’s basketball coach at Quest University Canada in Squamish, B.C.

Shook has been an assistant coach at Blaine, Ferndale and for the Bellingham Slam, and was head coach at Meridian High School for four seasons. He led the Trojans to the state tournament in 2002-03, and also served as head coach for the Meridian boys’ golf team.

Qwest University will play in the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) after playing last season as an exhibition team.

“I am thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to be the coach at Quest University,” Shook said in a press release. “I think that it offers a unique educational experience for the student-athlete. I am looking forward to recruiting the type of player that will fit both the school and my style of play.”
