COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK: Yeager’s slowpitch teams are off to good starts

The Yeager’s over-50 and over-60 slowpitch softball teams started their season In Kennewick and Wenatchee, respectively.
The Yeager’s 60s took first place in the Wenatchee Valley Senior Slowpitch Tournament. Yeager’s went 4-1 and defeated the Marauders (B.C.) 14-4, Fire One (Seattle) 20-3, Ruth Realty (Seattle) 22-21 and Geld-Wen (Oregon) 21-20.
Top hitters for the 60s were Doug Kittert (.923), Roger Metzgar (.857), Skip Baebler (.846) and Dave Hare (.778). John Wyatt had three home runs and Tully Swanberg and Metzgar each had one homer. Swanberg was named the tournament MVP.
The Yeager’s 50s went 2-2 at a tournament in Kennewick. The 50s defeated Bend Oregon Brewers 19-10 and Ruth Realty 28-27 before losing to Shawn Monte Logging (Idaho) 22-16 and Second Wind (Olympia) 19-8.
Leading hitters for the 50s were Richard Fnik (.813), Bob Bartholomew (.800), Zack Bruner (.714) and Ron Eastman (.706). Ken Lange had three home runs and Randy Cline, Tim Cox and Lee McClain each
had one homer.
STEAMERS WIN TOURNEY
The Chuckanut Rugby Steamers U-19 men’s team went 4-0 in California last week to win the Pacific Coast Invitational Tournament at Stanford University.
Chuckanut began with a victory over the Santa Cruz University freshman team 49-7. Paul Smith and Nick Miholovich scored two trys, and Nick Wallace, Max Rosenthal, Loui Mitchell, Michael Gonzales and Dustin Belvis had one try each. Mitchell and Wallace each scored a conversion.
The Steamers defeated top seed Lamirinda (Calif.) 20-7. Gonzales, Mitchell and Jacob Bates had trys, and Mitchell had one conversion.
Chuckanut defeated Marin County (Calif.) 36-0. Smith had two tries and Wallace, Mitchell, Gonzales and Bates had one try each. Mitchell also had a conversion.
The team’s final win was a 16-7 victory over Santa Rosa (Calif.) to clinch the tournament. Tyler Hatcher scored the lone try for Chuckanut and Mitchell had three conversions.
Three Chuckanut players
were named to the all-tournament team: Smith, Gavin Snyder and Mitchell.
RAIDERS UNDEFEATED
The Whatcom Raiders improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Cascade Football League with a 37-12 victory over the Snohomish County Thunder on Saturday at Arlington.
Oz Beardan caught two touchdowns to lead the Raiders. Toby Seim and Matt Hoss each added a touchdown reception and Joey Joshua recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.
Whatcom next plays at the Puget Sound Pirates on Saturday. The Raiders’ next home game is at 6 p.m. on May 24 against the Tacoma Invaders at Civic Stadium.
AAU GIRLS BASKETBALL
All girls entering the fifth grade this fall and their parents are invited to attend an informational meeting for the inaugural season of the Bellingham Breakers, a traveling AAU basketball team.
The meeting will give those interested to meet the coach and manager, ask questions and learn more about the commitment and financial responsibilities.
The meeting will be at 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Garden Street Family Center upstairs conference room, located at 1213 N. Tryouts for the team are scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. May 28 at Whatcom Gym 1 and 6 to 8 p.m. May 29 at Kulshan North and South gyms.
TORRES PLACES FIRST
Nicholas Torres placed first at the cadets/junior freestyle wrestling meet on Sunday at Sedro-Woolley to lead Ferndale wrestling entrants.
Torres won the cadet 160- pound division. Dylan Krenz finished third in the 125-pound cadet division, Jason Reiser finished third in the 140-pound junior division, and Corey Compton placed third in the 189-pound cadet division.
Also wrestling for Ferndale were Dillon Jimmie, Cory Whitley and John Pitsch.
DUO COMPETES AT STATE
Stephanie Johnson and Ashlee Stiles competed for Gym Star
Sports Center at the Washington State Level 4 gymnastics meet on April 26 in Bellevue, the first time Gym Star Sports Center competed at the state level.
Stiles finished as state champion on the balance beam in her age group division and third place in the all-around. Johnson won the vault and finished ninth in the all-around for her age group division.
Both competitors are from Ferndale and coached by Carolyn Saletto.
ROLLER BETTIES SATURDAY
The Bellingham Roller Betties open their flat-track roller derby season against the Jet City Rollergirls of Everett on Saturday at the Sportsplex.
The competition is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. with doors opening at 4 p.m. Tickets are $12 advance and $15 at the door, and $5 for kids 10 and under.
